Formation of protoplasts from resting spores.
Coat-stripped spores suspended in hypertonic solutions and supplied with two essential cations can be converted into viable protoplasts by lysozyme digestion of both cortex and germ cell wall. Calcium ions are necessary to prevent membrane rupture, and magnesium ions are necessary for changes indicative of hydration of the core, particularily the nuclear mass. Since remnant spore coat covered s...
متن کاملResting spores of the freshwater diatoms Acanthoceras and Urosolenia
Diatom resting spores are a widespread, but sometimes misconstrued component of siliceous micro fossil assemblages. We illustrate and discuss resting spore morphology found in populations of Acanthoceras and Urosolenia, two widely distributed freshwater genera. Taxonomic status of these genera and the potential paleolimnologic interpretation of resting spores are discussed.
متن کاملObservations on the nucleus of resting and germinating spores of Bacillus megaterium.
Information on nuclei in bacterial spores was both scanty and inconsistent until the Feulgen technique, in the hands of Stille (1937), Delaporte (1939), Schaede (1939) and others, revealed Feulgen positive matter in the shape of a granule or rodlet at the periphery of the majority of mature, resting spores of many well known Bacilus species, including Bacllus megaterium. A more detailed picture...

The method described in the present work allows the purity of the solution under test for tocopherols to be assessed and also enables the separation of the commonly occurring a-, yand 8-tocopherols to be achieved. Applications of the method to the examination of several oils indicate the usefulness of the method. For example, the presence of 8tocopherol in soya-bean oil is readily ascertained, ...
متن کاملDo small spores disperse further than large spores?
In species that disperse by airborne propagules an inverse relationship is often assumed between propagule size and dispersal distance. However, for microscopic spores the evidence for the relationship remains ambiguous. Lagrangian stochastic dispersion models that have been successful in predicting seed dispersal appear to predict similar dispersal for all spore sizes up to -40 microm diameter...
